The third floor attic space of this 5 bedroom home was converted into a master bedroom suite. The raw framing of the space inspired the final selection of finishes. Reclaimed barn wood and Ipe planks from the Chelsea Pier accent the gable end wall of the master bedroom. Ipe slat walls create a back-lit backdrop for the headboard and dresser, while also concealing bookshelves. The walk-in closet offers a variety of storage options and a changing space that separates the bedroom from the master bath. The open stair of the original house was continued to circulate up to the third floor by cutting through the ceiling and reconstructing the railing to match the existing. The result is a seamless stairway that reveals the first floor from the third floor above. Every square foot of the attic was maximized to create a peaceful, private atmosphere than anyone would enjoy at the end of a long day.
